The new year is quickly approaching and with it, a sense of nostalgia. As we look forward to 2017, I can’t help but look back on the past semester and all the fun I had in Alpha Phi. The semester started off with recruitment and subsequently bid day, when we got to welcome 58 baby Alpha Phis home. You can check out our Fall 2016 bid day, in all of it’s pizza-eating, roller skating glory here!
Later on in the semester, we hosted our first philanthropy event, Mac & Phis. Our chef, Vince, prepared bowls of delicious mac and cheese that we sold to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of women’s heart health. Towards the end of the year, our philanthropy team organized the Red Dress Gala, another benefit event for the Alpha Phi Foundation. Friends and family of our lovely Alpha Phis came from all across the country to meet each other and support our philanthropy. We raised over thirteen thousand dollars for the foundation!
Those are just a few of the big events we participated in, but Alpha Phis also do a lot more for our community. We partnered with our friends in Sigma Chi to fill and distribute bags of food and other necessities to homeless men and women around Berkeley. A group of Alpha Phis also participated in the Silicon Valley Heart Health Walk to fundraise for the American Heart Association. They dedicated an entire day to walking and raised $1,095 for the initiative!
Both of those activities were fun, but one of my favorite things I did this semester was participate in the Greening the Greeks big game cleanup. We helped pick up and recycle trash after the football game against Stanford. The weather was unseasonably cold and it was pouring rain, but I got to run around Greek Row with about 4 unbelievably outgoing freshmen in Alpha Phi and I ended up having the best time.
Throughout the year, Alpha Phi hosted and attended Panhellenic-wide study hours, mixers, invites, and date parties. Our newest members enjoyed their special week of gifts and attention, known as big-little week, as well as their retreat to Lake Tahoe. Additionally, our sisterhood committee scheduled regular events just for Alpha Phis, such as a trip to Dolores Park, a face mask bar, and several movie nights. We will also never forget the events planned and organized by our chaplain and initiation committee for all of our new Alpha Phis! This semester was packed with fun events and activities, and I can’t wait to see what next semester has in store!
