What to do on Cal Day
Welcome to Cal! Start your day off with a delicious brunch at La Note on Shattuck, a popular spot for many Alpha Phi ladies (our favorite is the lemon gingerbread pancakes). Head up to campus and walk through the seemingly endless booths on Sproul. Grab as many flyers as you can: from student clubs to different majors to intramural sports, Cal has so much to offer, and you’ll thank yourself later when you have the flyers to look at to make sense of it all!
Berkeley has so many gorgeous buildings, too. We recommend hopping inside Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) to see the massive, carefully reconstructed T-Rex towering above you. Doe Library is also a must-see: its giant windows and domed roof has an overtly scholarly vibe, and is arguably the best library to study in – our sisters can attest to this.
For lunch, make sure to try the hot dogs at Top Dog, a Berkeley classic. Artichoke pizza is also a fan favorite, and is practically right next door. For a sweet dessert, Cinnaholic is a must (hard to believe it’s vegan!).
Don’t forget to take the elevator up Berkeley’s most recognizable landmark, the Campanile – on the clearest of days, you can see the Golden Gate. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take a quick hike up to the Big C, a classic Berkeley tradition that also has a great view of the Bay. And if you get the chance to visit the new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) down on Center St., you’ll love wandering the free galleries filled with art of all kinds.
Stop by the Panhellenic table at Kroeber Fountain (at College and Bancroft, across the street from Caffe Strada) to sign up for a tour of one of the 13 sorority houses on campus! Not only will you have the chance to meet Panhellenic women, you’ll get a sneak peek of their gorgeous homes, too.
Exhausted, right? For a much-needed dinner, try Cancún Mexican Restaurant down near Shattuck, or if you want to eat where most students eat (read: affordable), Asian Ghetto on Durant has everything from Thai food to Italian to gyros.
Whether you’re walking down Telegraph, sipping coffee on North Side, jogging to the Botanical Gardens, or studying in Main Stacks, Berkeley has so much to offer – and the best part is having sisters to share it all with.
